What To Think About When Buying Home Exercise Equipment
By Dr. Kang-pang Chan
When thinking of buying any home exercise equipment you should look at your exercise schedule and make sure that it includes the following:
1. Strength training
2. Aerobic exercise
3. Flexibility training
It is vitally important that when purchasing any sort of exercise equipment for the home you should include at least 2 of these exercises into your schedule.
However, the great thing is that you do not need to invest large amounts of your hard earned money in purchasing expensive fitness equipment just to get into shape. All you need is a few pieces of equipment or the best way you can save both on space and money is buying one piece of equipment that can be used to exercise several different muscle groups instead.
So just what should I be looking at when thinking about buying some home exercise equipment?
When first starting to look at buying home exercise equipment why not consider purchasing some hand weights? Not only are the best but they are the least expensive of the ways for beginning home exercise. They help to strengthen and tone the upper body. Or why not go for a stability ball instead. These are used in both Yoga and Pilates classes and are particularly good for building up your abs and your back muscles.
However, if you happen to be on a tight budget then consider purchasing a workout DVD instead. These types of DVD's provide you with all sorts of exercises which only require simple equipment such as a floor mat or step up board. You could even consider purchasing a rowing machine or a exercise bicycle as these come in a variety of different styles and you can pick up for a basic model for less than $100.
But if you happen to be someone who has a larger budget and is going to be taking their exercise serious then you should look at purchasing either a treadmill, elliptical trainer or a high specification exercise bicycle. All of these will give you a rigorous cardiovascular workout. The main benefit to be had from buying a treadmill is that it combines two of the most popular forms of exercise (walking and running). Whilst the elliptical trainer is growing in popularity as a piece of home exercise equipment because of the low impact workout that combines with upper and lower body exercises also.
Most important of all, it's always good to go back to the basics before deciding whether or not to invest in a home gym or equipment - if you have all the equipment that you're thinking of acquiring right now, will you be happy to stay with your home exercise programs? Or do you think you'd get bored very quickly and hit for the gym sooner than you can imagine?
As a certified personal trainer myself, I've always asked my clients this basic and practical question to alert them of the need to truly understand their desires before committing themselves financially. It's not unusual to see the newly acquired equipment being ignored just because my clients finally realize that they don't like the loneliness to work out at their home gym at all soon after they've purchased all the equipment!
